Propp's Character Theory

Propp developed a character theory that can be applied to fairytales, but they can be applied to some horror films.

Propp's Character Theory:

  1. The Hero (saves the princess, and falls in love with her)
  2. The Villain ( tries to harm the princess and fights with the hero)
  3. The Donor (helps the hero by providing a magic object)
  4. The Dispatcher ( sends the hero on his way)
  5. The False Hero ( falsely assuming the role of the hero)
  6. The Helper (gives support to the hero)
  7. The Princess ( the reward for the hero but also needs to be protected from the villain)
Propp's theories rely on the idea that characters are either 'good' or 'bad'. He also ignores character, tone and mood in his analysis which differentiates one tale from another.
