Audience reactions from Melisa Hasan on Vimeo.
For my audience research I decided to show my target audience the trailer for Grave Encounters. The reason why I decided to show this trailer was because the trailer uses good filming techniques such as the trailer includes clip from a video camera giving the effect that the film was filmed on a hand held camera, and also the trailer switched from that footage to the clips being filmed professionally. When I first watched this horror trailer I was very scared because I don't like films to be about ghosts and paranormal things, and my reaction was very similar to the ones I have included in this video. At the end of the trailer I thought it was very effective because the trailer looks like it is finished and the audience feel relieved but what they don't know is that there is a very jumpy clip after. The screen goes black but then you hear a females voice whispering and a clip quickly jumps on the screen with a loud noise. The sound was very effective because in all the reaction videos each of the individuals jump because it was not expected.
The video of the first reactions to the trailer, they show the most fright. The parts where they are most scared they cover their eyes and look away, they done this where they felt something was going to jump out and when the music started to build up. Another reaction that I thought showed fright was that instead of covering her eyes she just looked away. When I asked her after she said thats the best way of her dealing with the scary clips in trailer and films. The male viewer in this video didn't really show any emotion that he was scared, he just looked like her was watching a normal film. This shows that the male viewers of horror films don't get as scared as the females because maybe they can draw a line of whats really and what is made up to scare the viewers. I decided to show the trailer in the dark because the darkness alone sometimes scares the viewers, and the darkness takes away all the detail away from whats around the room so they are tempted to look at the screen.
From my audience reactions it can help me with making my final horror trailer. It can help me because in this trailer music was used to create tension and this made it more jumpy and scary to the audience, I can tell this because when there was sudden loud noises the audience jumped and also covered their eyes. This shows that if music is used correctly it can make or break your trailer and it can also determine how successful your trailer is.
